Has this ever happened to you?
Unfortunately, traditional financial planning has been the
source of much of the stress that people currently feel in their financial
lives. Many question how this stress is still prevalent when as a society we
have been trained to hire someone to avoid financial difficulties? The root of
the problem lies in the way planning is carried out. Consider the following
scenario.
Financial Advisor Jim: Hi Charlotte, it's great to see you again. Tell
me, what can I do for you today?
Charlotte: Well Jim, I would like to know what to do to about (insert your financial goal here).
I feel like I'm behind in planning and I need to catch up. My (insert name of your
dad/husband/brother/neighbor co-worker here) recommended you and
said that you'd take care of me. I'm very excited about getting started.
Financial Advisor Jim: You know, referrals are the only way
I do business so that was very nice of him. Basically, all you need to do to (insert your financial goal here) is
BLAH BLAH BLAH. The stock market BLAH BLAH BLAH and over time you should BLAH
BLAH BLAH. Since I'm a fee-based advisor I'm usually paid BLAH BLAH BLAH
instead of BLAH BLAH BLAH. You should watch out for those guys. Okay, now that
you understand all of the particulars just sign right here and we can go ahead
and get started.
Charlotte: Not wanting to
ask questions because she doesn't want to seem like an idiot, but really is
unsure of what just happened says "Okay" and secretly hopes she's making a
good decision. That's
what (insert name of your dad/husband/brother/neighbor co-worker here) would
do, right?!
WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE
Traditional
Financial Planning is often used as a marketing tool to sell financial
products. The reason? To generate commissions on the recommendations given.
Typically, you have no way of knowing whether the recommendations given by the
financial planner are in your best interest or the best interest of the
financial planner. You also have little way of knowing whether the products
could have been obtained elsewhere at lower cost. In addition, the majority of
financial planners work for a brokerage firm or a broker/dealer and not for
you. Therefore, the brokerage firm controls what products can be recommended
and you are steered towards those products.
Second, the traditional planning process does little to educate investors and
help them deal with the instincts and emotions that are at the root of poor
investment returns. The problem with making financial decisions is that you
often don't know what you don't know. Asking the right questions can help you
make better decisions about your wealth. If you would like someone to help you
understand not only what your options are, but how they will affect your
overall comprehensive financial plan, contact Cali Pearl for a complimentary initial
consultation.
